WELCOME TO THE WASSCE CHEMISTRY COURSE
These resources are intended to assist students and teachers who are working towards the WASSCE Chemistry examinations in Nigeria, Sierra Leone and Gambia. The majority of the specification (Section A) also applies to the WASSCE Chemistry exams in Ghana.
These resources assume that students are also taking the WASSCE Integrated Science examinations - the resources cover all sections of the Integrated Science course that relate to Chemistry. The following document shows the course structure in full and how it is linked to the Chemistry and Integrated Science syllabi; it also includes a list of chemicals and equipment required:
The specification is not designed to be taught, or studied, in the order in which it presents itself. The following attachment shows how the content has been reorganised into fourteen topics which can be taught in this order:
Notes on workbooks:
- There is one workbook for each Unit, which includes notes, exercises and practicals
- The teacher version contains all answers and practical instructions in the text and may be the most useful version for teachers to use in class
- The student version does not contain answers or practical instructions in the text and is the recommended version for students
- Self-directing students can get answers to all exercises in the separate booklet; teachers may also prefer to use the student version with the answer sheet instead of the teacher version
The meanings of the symbols are as follows:
- Activity - student completes simple task to illustrate a concept
- Demonstration - teacher conducts a practical exercise whilst the class observes
- Practical - student carries out a practical exercise under the supervision of a teacher
- Summary - student recalls knowledge and understanding of material covered earlier in the course and needed for the next section
- Test Your Knowledge - student tests understanding of material just covered (Extension - student tests understanding further with more complex problems)
- Thinkabout - student considers wider significance of material just covered, beyond the scope of the examination
